Jim Vokal on first-round passage of inheritance tax reduction

OMAHA, NE – This is a statement by Platte Institute Chief Executive Officer Jim Vokal on the first-round passage of Legislative Bill 310 and Revenue Committee Amendment 635 by a 41-4 vote.

“Today, senators took an important first step toward modernizing Nebraska’s county inheritance tax. LB310 would prevent more families and businesses from having to go through the county court to pay inheritance tax, fully exempt many younger people from inheritance tax, and improve reporting about how the tax is being collected by all 93 counties. However, the number of states that levy inheritance taxes continues to dwindle, and soon Nebraska will be one of only 5 states to have this tax. The Legislature will need to continue to assess how inheritance taxes are impacting residents and identify reforms to remove the disadvantages imposed by the tax,” said Vokal.
