Jim Vokal on First Round Approval of LB103
Bill Requires Board Vote to Adopt Valuation Tax Increases
This is a statement by Platte Institute Chief Executive Officer Jim Vokal following the Nebraska Legislature’s General File vote on Sen. Lou Ann Linehan’s LB103, a property tax limitation proposal which was approved in its first round of debate 35-2.
“The Legislature gave strong nonpartisan support to LB103 today. Nebraskans have experienced the country’s sixth-fastest growth in housing prices over the last decade. This bill will help protect taxpayers from automatic tax increases that can occur when property valuations increase, but tax levies stay the same. Giving Nebraskans the chance to attend a dedicated hearing and board vote about these types of tax increases provides greater local transparency for taxpayers and added accountability for local taxing subdivisions,” said Vokal.
