WHAT: The Platte Institute’s 2016 Legislative Summit: Removing Barriers in Nebraska. The summit is an annual event that brings together policymakers, candidates, researchers, and community and business leaders to discuss opportunities to improve economic policy in Nebraska in the coming year’s legislative session. Nebraskans running businesses of all sizes and types, from the self-employed to a publicly traded company, will share their stories of encountering policy barriers to growth and opportunity in Nebraska. Program topics and activities will include:
- Opening remarks by Gov. Pete Ricketts (8:30 a.m.)
- A panel on Removing Barriers to Economic Growth: the impact of tax reform on business growth and formation. (8:45-9:15 a.m.)
- A panel on Removing Barriers to Entrepreneurship: rethinking Nebraska’s burdensome occupational licensing laws. (9:30-10:15 a.m.)
- A keynote speech by Gallup Chairman and CEO Jim Clifton on the importance of entrepreneurship in creating good jobs. (10:30-11:15 a.m.)
- And a luncheon speech by Dr. Vicki Alger on Opportunity Scholarships, and their national track record of success increasing education choices for working families through nonprofit K-12 scholarship granting organizations. (11:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m.)
The Platte Institute will also unveil a new campaign effort for job creation and regulatory reform (9:15-9:30 a.m.), and honor the winner of the Institute’s 2016 Connie Brown Freedom Award (12:15 p.m.).
The complete agenda and event registration may also be viewed online at nelegsummit.eventbrite.com.
WHEN & WHERE: Tuesday, October 11, 2016, 8:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. (registration opens at 8:00 a.m.) Embassy Suites Lincoln, Regents Ballroom D, E, F at 1040 P Street, Lincoln, NE 68508
WHY: Hardworking Nebraskans face too many barriers to success. Government data published in the Platte Institute’s recent Removing Barriers in Nebraska policy brief series show that job growth in Nebraska fell below the national average over the past decade, and states that are creating more new jobs and businesses are gaining income and population at Nebraska’s expense. Whether it's addressing high taxes, bureaucratic red tape, or a lack of educational choices for families, state policymakers can do much more to remove these barriers and put the Good Life within reach for our citizens.
DETAILS: Members of the media are invited to attend. Complimentary registration is available at nelegsummit.eventbrite.com. Jim Clifton’s bio and photo are available here.
