Legislative Testimony for January 29: LB57
Bill Prevents Local Bans on Home-sharing Rentals
LINCOLN, NE – The Platte Institute will testify in support of Sen. Adam Morfeld’s Legislative Bill 57 before the Legislature’s Urban Affairs Committee today.
Platte Institute Director of Government Relations Nicole Fox will testify in State Capitol Room 1510. The hearing begins at 1:30 p.m. and the bill is currently first on the agenda.
LB57 prohibits local ordinances that would ban the use of home-sharing services like Airbnb for short-term residential rentals. Under the proposal, localities would be permitted to create regulations for health, safety, and other nuisances, and homeowners associations could still prohibit the rentals.
“An outright ban on homeowners using their own property to earn income by providing a short-term residential rental—also known as home-sharing—should not be on the list of policy options available to cities and villages,” said Fox.
“Laws similar to what is being proposed in LB57 have passed in recent years in Arizona, Tennessee and Indiana. In California, residents in Palm Springs, a popular tourist destination, overwhelmingly voted down a proposal that would have banned home-sharing in single-family homes,” said Fox.
