John S. McCollister
John McCollister grew up and attended high school in Omaha, graduating from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in 1971 with a degree in Business Administration.
He then embarked upon a 35 year career with McCollister & Co, a three generation family business that manufactured lubricants for large commercial, industrial and private label customers in fourteen Midwestern states. Ranked in the top quarter of independent lubricant manufacturers in the country, the manufacturing company was sold to Growmark, a large farm cooperative, in 2006.
Accepting a challenge outside the business sector, McCollister joined the Platte Institute as its Executive Director February 1, 2009. Founded in 2007, the Institute is a non-profit economic research foundation that promotes limited government, personal responsibility, free enterprise in Nebraska.
John recently completed his fifth term on the publically elected Metropolitan Utilities District Board of Directors, which provides natural gas and water to the Omaha area. An unusual but successful publically owned enterprise, MUD offers its customers some of the lowest natural gas and water rates in the country. In 2008 McCollister sought but was an unsuccessful candidate for the Nebraska Public Service Commission.
McCollister has been involved with the Scouting program for more than 40 years as a Scout, Scoutmaster and Cub master. He received the Silver Beaver award from the Mid-America Council in 1999. McCollister currently serves on the Executive Board of the Council and was an officer in 2000 - 2003.
John currently is Board Chair for the American Diabetes Association – Nebraska – Iowa Chapter. With diabetes nearing epidemic proportions in our country, McCollister feels a great need to assist in the important mission of the ADA.
McCollister is a member of Countryside Community Church and has served on numerous church boards. He has served as Church Moderator and Chair of the Building Committee which renovated the church in 2000. He currently serves on the Countryside Church Foundation.
John is married to Deborah Way McCollister; they are the proud parents of Lauren, Dan and Jeff; and new grandson Andrew, son of Lauren and Dan Ledger.
